Brekker credits a Super8 his brother found in a garage sale for igniting his passion for film.
“It was a sort of mystery whenever I filmed anything with it. It was like I had no control over what I was filming but I had full power of how I could show it.”
In his young career, he’s already made it a fruitful one by releasing four critically acclaimed films. Three of which reached the shortlist for the Oscars and his most recent receiving a nomination for best picture among others.
“There’s something about portraying a heist in film that, if done right, just immerses the audience in it. When ‘Crows’ premiered in Cannes and the audience just sort of took a collective sigh of relief when the group did what they had to, I had chills everywhere.”
His new film ‘Crows’ contains little dialogue- much like his other films- and the 10- minute silent opening sequence is both striking and sensible, getting the job done of capturing the audience and building up the world of the film.
When asked why he creates the film he does, his reply is as remarkable as the dialogue his films feature.
